He entered the commodities futures business in 1979, the same year he and his wife Nancy were married. After working as a commodity futures broker and then vice-president of a division in an Illinois company, he moved to St. Louis in 1987, becoming the Branch Manager for a small investment firm.

He was working as a partner in a management-consulting firm when he and his wife Nancy began attending Twin Oaks Presbyterian Church in Ballwin, MO, and both came to faith in Christ.

He began coursework at Covenant Seminary in 1993 and began serving as the church administrator for Twin Oaks in 1995. He graduated in 2001 with a M.Div. from Covenant Seminary, was ordained in 2002 and began Spring Hills as a new church plant in September 2002.

Dave is married to Nancy (Hill) Stain. They have 2 children, Katie and Rob. Katie is married to Tommy Ragsdale and they have 2 children, Hunter & Aubrey. Rob is married to Rachel (Ferrara) and they have 3 children, Robbie, David, and Emma.
